Vulcan Trail

Walking Where Ore Trains Ran

This map shows the route of the Mineral Branch of the L&N as it ran along Red Mountain above the City of Birmingham.  At the Red Mountain Gap, current site of the Vulcan Statue, the railroad crossed from the north face to the south face of the mountain.

The photo at the right shows the bridge abutment of the former railroad bridge over 18th Street at the top of Red Mountain.  The bridge abutment is not the stone work at the top, but is a concrete structure covered in vegetation.

This view is taken looking northeast, standing below the Vulcan Statue at the trailhead.

What is the Vulcan Statue?

"Ya'll ain't from around here are ya?"
