Grade Separation and the "Viaducts"

 

This postcard view of the "Rainbow Viaduct" (21st Street) is a memorial to heroes of WW I.  Compare the image to the picture below taken in the 1990's of the actual structure.

Although stylized on the postcard, there is an interesting comparison indicating that the old buildings were fairly accurately shown.  Many of these buildings in this view are still standing.

 

This separation was accomplished in stages, involving several viaducts, the tunnel noted above, and the ultimate raising of the mainline railroad tracks in the vicinity of the L & N station.  There was great debate about "viaducts" versus "underpasses".  The City had a plan ready to go forward, but the railroad companies, L & N, Seaboard, and Southern wouldn't agree to the plan.
