Downtown Grade Separation Images Return to Trackplan

This is the 18th Street Underpass, (originally called a "subway" for street vehicles) built as part of the grade separation project. The former L&N Passenger Station platforms are visible by the tank cars. This part of the 1930 era station became a corn syrup unloading facility in its latter years -- the tank cars are Archer Daniels Midland cars. This view is looking south toward Red Mountain, South Side and UAB.  This picture also shows how the street grade was lowered to achieve clearance as the railroad was also raised.
