Downtown Grade Separation Images Return to Trackplan

This is a view of the 24th Street Viaduct which was replaced in the late 1990's. Note the "jersey barrier" type parapet on the bridge. The City of Birmingham required the ALDOT to utilize an historic style parapet over Morris Avenue on the other end of the bridge. The photo is taken from 1st Avenue South, looking west, along the SAL tracks (c. 1904) and toward the "cut" created by the grade separation project (c. 1930).  This was the end of track in the early 1990's when this picture was taken.  Originally tracks continued to the freight house and beyond toward about 12th Street.
